While they are almost universally characterized as savages, the Gnoll are a culture unto themselves, albeit one that values warrior culture, ritual sacrifice and brutality more than anything else.
Hailing from the Ventuun Jungle, Gnolls travel in Packs made up of extended family units. These are truly tribal units, organized around a strong chieftain or a cluster of warriors. They are hunter-gathering societies that eat with the seasons and relish pursuing wild game. When times are good, the Gnolls often turn to warring with one another.
About 200 years ago, the Gnolls formed a great warband under a semi-legendary figure named Barynlanx Hacupi Edad. He formed a coalition of Packs and led the Gnolls into the fertile Estara Penisula where they quickly overpowered the native Gnomes and forced them from their home into exile. In the intervening years, the Gnolls have used the resources and rubble left by the Gnomes to form a more stable, unified culture based around elder warriors (Chieftains of Packs) who use any means necessary to reach consensus when needed (and fight amongst each other when they don't). A rising religious caste has come together around the indigenous folk religions of the packs. Not quite a unified religion, Gnoll priests worship an emorphous cosmos of land spirits, demons, gods and ancestors who share little in common other than their love of ritual sacrifice. Souls unlucky enough to not be kille doutright by a Gnoll warband are likely to be sold into slavery or watch their own entrails pulled out atop one of the enormous stone pyramids that overshadow the Gnolls' cities.
